Abstract

Based on concepts developed by historical-cultural criticism, this Course Completion Work seeks to identify the representation of the strength of women's voice in the patriarchal structure of society in the Elizabethan era in the sixteenth century, at the beginning of modernity. To investigate the place of women in society, Shakespeare shows through his scenic conventions that women can be independent of marriage, and Queen Elisabeth I herself is independent and critical of the patriarchal society of the time for preaching that women should marry. if and obey your husband. Through comedy in his plays, Shakespeare manages to approach strong female characters, who do not surrender to the dominance of men, and criticize what is preached as "right and acceptable" by society for a woman. Thus, this research has as its main objective to portray the voice of women, representing the feminine present in the patriarchy of the sixteenth century through the play The Taming of the Shrew, by Shakespeare, bringing to this analysis the character of Catarina, was strong and tried to keep her voice before the the patriarchal society, being against marriage and the rules that were imposed on women. The analysis of the character Catarina was based on the authors Bárbara Heliodora (2014), Michelle Perrot (2003) and Simone Beauvoir (1967). The works to be used with quotations here, try to bring the mark of the place, space and the voice of the woman before this modern society. As a result, the analysis showed that Catarina was strong and defended her opinion and her voice, she did not take orders before marriage.
