Abstract

The miniseries The Queen's Gambit transports us to the 1950s and 60s, a period of social and cultural transformations, especially regarding the role of women in society. Within this context, the representation of different forms of femininity plays a crucial role in the plot, standing out as a lens through which we can analyze the expectations of the time regarding female behavior. By exploring these representations, it is possible to identify the symbols used to portray them, revealing nuances of conformity and subversion concerning the social sphere. In this sense, this work aims to analyze the trajectories of the characters Beth Harmon, Jolene Dewitt, Annette Packer, Alma Wheatley, and Margaret Johnson, to understand how different forms of femininity were represented and how these representations were constructed through symbols of power. Drawing from the ideas of Simone de Beauvoir (2019), Michelle Perrot (2019), Betty Friedan (1971), and Judith Butler (2021), we will seek to examine certain expectations of 1960s society regarding women's behavior, evaluating them from the perspective of conformity or subversion to the social sphere. And from the perspectives of Esquinazi (2011), Jost (2012), and Marcel (2005), we will delve into the universe of the series, uncovering the complexities of the female experiences lived by these characters and reflecting on how they challenged or conformed to the social norms of the time. By understanding the representations and symbolism present in the miniseries, we can shed light on the dynamics of power and female identity in the depicted historical and social context, contributing to a deeper analysis of gender relations at the time and their relevance for understanding the transformations that occurred in society.
