O olhar opositor negro: estratégias afrofuturistas nas colagens digitais de Karina Duarte e Jesso Alves

Abstract

This research aims to identify emancipation strategies using Afrofuturist language in the production of Brazilian visual artists. To this end, the digital collages made by Karina Duarte and Jesso Alves between the years 2019 to 2022 gained prominence. In the works of these artists, the Afrofuturist language enables the construction of meanings that confront stereotypes of race, gender, sexuality and social class. Through the analysis of images, I want to argue that the Afrofuturist productions of Karina Duarte and Jesso Alves are articulated with the guidelines of the Black Antiracist Movement through the construction of what bell hooks calls the black oppositional gaze, a concept supported by the perspective of intersectionality. In terms of methodological order, a bibliographical review was initially carried out on the themes discussed in the research and, for the execution of the image analysis, Ana Maria Mauad’s image reading protocol was used. The choice to privilege the relationship between Afrofuturism and intersectional guidelines is justified by the importance of understanding both the struggle guidelines and black corporalities as multiple and diverse.
