A questão ambiental e o planejamento urbano: a experiência de Curitiba

Abstract

This Work has as main theme analyze the problems of unplanned urbanization and seek to understand how sustainability might be the solution to major issues of today. To do so, broke a historical or sociological study, emphasizing the changes occurring in the planet for the last three centuries, as a result of industrial development and the rapid growth of cities. Through this study has shown the emergence of environmental issues and how it has in recent decades, gaining importance in international discussions. Also discussed is the emergence of the terms sustainability and sustainable development, its meaning and applicability. In addition to addressing the evolution of the Brazilian view on the environment, are seen two instruments available to policy makers for sustainable urban planning: the Master Plan and the City Statute. In this pattern it is presented the new challenge posed to the cities to use by future generations. Are examples of important initiatives in cities across Brazil and around the world, places that has been making efforts in the way of developing more Just and sustainable. For the last, we conducted a comprehensive case study, having as object the sustainable urban planning of Curitiba, as suggested by internation organizations as one of the world’s most sutainable cities. The origin of its urban planning, its stages, the emergence of environmental concern and the consolidation of the image of “Ecological Capital” are some points of this study. Finally, are listed and discussed the main initiatives in environmental sustainability developed in Curitiba, in order to demonstrate how to experience of Curitiba can inspire the similar projects in any city, either in Brazil or elsewhere.
