Implantação da coleta seletiva em um condomínio residencial em Curitiba

Abstract

Federal Law No. 12.305/10 established a National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) that provides guidelines for the solid waste management, the responsibilities of generators and government and economic instruments. Selective garbage collection is the first step for recycling, allowing the separation of materials at the source, preventing contamination and consequently their devaluation. This paper aims to implement a selective garbage collection program in a residential condominium in Curitiba. Among the activities performed, a preliminary diagnosis of the current situation of waste and meetings with residents to assess the level of knowledge about waste separation are highlighted. The preparation of explanatory graphical material, promotion of environmental education activities with the residents, employee orientation, the search for partnerships with collector cooperatives, increasing the number of collection points for solid waste were assessed by monitoring the implementation of selective collection. A structured questionnaire was elaborated to verify the understanding of residents on "Selective collection". With a return of 30.2% of the questionnaires, it was showed that the profiles of the respondents correspond to 68.4% female aged over 51 years, education over high school and with incomes higher than 5 minimum wages. Although 100% of answering respondents demonstrated to know the difference between organic waste and recyclables, 46% of the material deposited in the condo general trash corresponds to recyclables, on the average. After the sensitization activities with the residents and children of the condominium, it was found improvement in discarding some recyclable materials such as glass, plastic and hazardous wastes that were not found in two of the three analyzes.
