Praça Rui Barbosa: uma proposta de modernização

Abstract

This thesis seeks to demonstrate the significance and influence that urbanism and landscaping, as well as architectural design, contribute to the vitality and improvement of public spaces, this study specifically focuses on Rui Barbosa square in Curitiba, Paraná. Rui Barbosa- although a powerful representation of Curitiba’s rich culture, and strong history in transport and popular trade- finds itself in a situation of mischaracterization, under use, deterioration, and unreliability; which undermine the core purposes of providing entertainment, recreation and good memories for the region of the plaza. The goal of this thesis is to gather and analyze data from an extensive bibliography so as to explore how the activities, the occupation, and the current characterization of the square can be improved on, thereby bringing in new audiences and a wider range of activities that correspond with the changing needs of the population. Mappings were conducted, measurements and on-site analysis, which observe the characteristics of daily usage and occupation, as well as interviews with the target audience. From the gathered data, results show that Rui Barbosa square not only fails to meet the characteristics inherent in a square, but also fails to reach the same modern standards that the city itself .The proof of these results, in addition to the case studies-in particular of the current conditions of the square -make possible the proposition of this project in order to establish guidelines for the clearing and renewal of Rua da Cidadania, thereby preserving and maintaining its strengths. To the open area of the square, this thesis proposes a more vibrant and dynamic landscaping along with improvement of urban furnishings, making it suitable for all possible activities, as well as improve the flow for passers-by.
