Abstract

The changes in economic, political and social standards, and the constant evolution of technologies and media, bringing to contemporary society a diversity of family arrangements and the modification of housing functions. Due to these factors, it is essential to review the living space, so that it adapts to a everchanging society. As a answer to this situation, flexibility in architecture becomes an interesting option, since this strategy allows the adaptation of housing to the momentary and future needs of the different family arrangements of contemporary society. The present work aims to create a theoretical basis to enabling the development of a flexible housing in the center of Curitiba. Initiated by the analysis of the housing production in the course of history and the current population trends, then with the understanding of the concepts of flexibility, analyzing the history, its types and the constructive solutions to reach, and finally, the identification of the chosen location, the downtown of Curitiba.
