Abstract

The connection with the environment transcends the physical, involving emotions, experiences, and memories. This interaction generates a sense of attachment and involvement with the place, profound enough to define an individual's identity. Understanding the origin of a place is crucial to comprehending how it influences human relationships on different levels, whether as a physical space or as a repository of meaning, memory, and identity. Society develops orientation systems that help individuals form suitable environmental images, utilizing focal points, regions, or paths that harmonize the relationship between the individual and the environment. This interaction is fundamental in transforming space into a place laden with meaning and identity, fostering a sense of belonging. Thus, this work historically addresses the relationships between the individual and public space, proposing that these connections be developed through the encouragement of space appropriation. The memory and perception of architectural spaces are also deeply personal and emotive, often transcending the form and function of the space. Bodily movement and interaction with the surroundings are essential for the formation of individual and collective memories, enriched by feelings and emotions. Therefore, to establish a deep connection between the individual and the city, it is believed that the development of a neighborhood center can meet this demand. This work is based on the presented design guidelines, grounded in case studies, urban analysis, and historical theoretical foundation, aspiring to create a space that promotes cultural development and a sense of belonging to the city.
