Os reflexos das marcas patriarcais na personagem Oribela, em Desmundo, de Ana Miranda

Abstract

Written by Ana Miranda in 1996, the novel Desmundo portrays the arrival of Oribela de Mendo Curvo on a Portuguese ship in Brazil during the colonization period in the 16th century. Told through the lens of the narrator-character, Oribela reveals her life's journey through her daily experiences and obstacles, discussing her feelings and differences in relation to the historical and social scenario in which she lives. Unlike what is expected of the female role, the protagonist subverts the ideals of the patriarchal system, upsetting the established order. In view of these points, the aim of this novel is to analyze some of the patriarchal marks that emanate from the pages of the narrative, concentrated mainly through the historical context of the time, the marriage to Francisco de Albuquerque, their consolidated relationship and Oribela's perspective. Thus, the reason for this study focusing on these elements stems, above all, from the intention to contribute to the study of historical, social and literary constructions through narrative, since the work allows us to trace striking aspects of 16th century patriarchy, starting from the focus of the historical context and the way in which the marks are represented in the narrative. From this perspective, this work seeks, through Candido's (1980) analysis proposal, to relate text and context in order to understand the social factors that are internalized in the book. The aim is to identify which patriarchal elements belonging to the work are developed in the narrative and contribute to understanding how patriarchal marks are presented in the novel. Taking into account the historical and social context of the sixteenth century in which the plot takes place this work seeks to understand the ways in which the protagonist is treated and the main reasons that move Oribela to subvert the lordly world, highlighting some cracks in the patriarchal order. Through the discussions here, a general overview is presented of the exercise of masculine and patriarchal logic in the 16th century and the protagonist's constant refusals to adhere to the prevailing order. In short, Desmundo highlights the countless forms of oppression experienced by Oribela and other characters in the narrative and reveals that some patriarchal marks still persist in the social cracks of the 21st century.
