| Resumo: | A fanfiction online existe por meio da intervenção praticada por fãs, que usam seu conhecimento e seu afeto a certos conteúdos para criar um hábito de leitura em uma segunda língua. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo definir as percepções dos leitores de fanfiction sobre a eficácia da leitura do gênero na aquisição da língua inglesa, além de determinar se o leitor engaja-se com a fanfiction em inglês com o objetivo de aprender a língua. Com o intuito de construir um panorama teórico geral dos assuntos abordados na pesquisa, buscamos explicar algumas influências linguísticas e psicológicas por trás da aquisição informal de língua, como a motivação, as inteligências múltiplas e o filtro afetivo (DÖRNYEI, 1998; GARDNER, 1991; KRASHEN, 1982). Também trazemos o foco ao conceito de compreensão de leitura e sua intervenção na aquisição informal da língua inglesa (KRASHEN; BLAND, 2014; RENANDYA; JACOBS, 2002). Construímos um histórico da fanfiction e sua ascensão (COPPA, 2006), além das características gerais do gênero (BLACK, 2006; TOSENBERGER, 2014), em um esforço para apresentar a importância da prática de leitura do conteúdo no desenvolvimento de uma segunda língua. Buscando expandir o entendimento da fanfiction online e sua influência na aquisição da língua inglesa, o instrumento utilizado nesta pesquisa foi um questionário compartilhado nas plataformas comumente utilizadas por leitores de fanfiction, alcançando mais de 100 respostas de variados participantes de diversas idades e de um total de 34 países. Com tal diversidade de respostas, os hábitos desses leitores, sua interação informal com a língua e suas opiniões em relação à aquisição de língua inglesa foram reunidas e analisadas para investigar a forma com a qual leitores de fanfiction adquirem essa segunda língua. Averiguaram-se também as motivações por trás do processo, as quais se provaram majoritariamente voltadas ao interesse no conteúdo ao invés da língua. Ainda, apresentou-se a importância do gênero no desenvolvimento do vocabulário e na habilidade de escrita, além da aproximação com o uso natural da língua em contextos informais e cotidianos. |
| Abstract: | Online fanfiction exists openly targeted to fans, using the knowledge and affection that people have over the content they admire as a form of easing them into the habit of reading in a second language. Therefore, this study aims to define how the online fanfiction reader believes this kind of reading affects the acquisition of the English language and whether online fanfiction readers seek English content with the purpose of acquiring the language. To build a theoretical overview of the themes presented in this research, we explored the psychological and linguistic influences of motivation, multiple intelligences and the affective filter (DÖRNYEI, 1998; GARDNER, 1991; KRASHEN, 1982) on informal language acquisition, while also bringing forth the concept of reading comprehension and its influence in informal language acquisition (KRASHEN; BLAND, 2014; RENANDYA; JACOBS, 2002). We gathered a brief history of fanfiction as a genre by Coppa (2006) as well as its characteristics (BLACK, 2006; TOSENBERGER, 2014) to justify the importance of the genre in language development. With the goal of expanding the understanding of online fanfiction and its influence on second language acquisition, the instrument chosen for this research was a questionnaire, shared through the platforms commonly used by fanfiction readers, reaching over 100 responses from a diversity of participants of various ages and a total of 34 countries. With this variety of responses, the habits of fanfiction readers as well as their informal language acquisition input and views on language learning were assembled and analysed, investigating to find the approach used by fanfiction readers to acquire language. We also inquired their motivations behind it, which proved to be mostly based around their interest in the genre and not in the language. The importance of the genre in the participants’ vocabulary development and written skills, along with the improvement in the use of the language in a natural and informal context, were also affirmed. |
