Abstract

This research conducts a comparative analysis between Margaret Atwood's novel The Handmaid's Tale and its television adaptation directed by Bruce Miller. The peculiarity lies in Margaret Atwood's active participation as a producer and commentator on the series, adding a unique dimension to the dialogue between the two works. Adopting the theoretical principles of Intersemiotic Translation, the study explores the transcodification between the verbal sign system of the novel and the audiovisual system of the series. The central focus is on the evolution of the narrative. The analysis compares the first episode of the series with the first three sessions of the book, considering the temporal gap between the works and the different conceptions and contextualizations of each period. Divided into three chapters, the study examines the relationship between the creators (Miller and Atwood), the intersemiotic theory applied to the literary work, and the intersemiotic elements shaping the translation, including the socio-political context. The active participation of Atwood in the series, playing a crucial role in the transmutation from literary work to television, is highlighted. Positioned within the fields of English Literature and Intermediality, the research offers an innovative approach to the comparative analysis between a novel and its television adaptation, considering temporal distance, socio-political realities, and contemporary relevance. The choice of the theme aims to explore a globally impactful novel, examining its characteristicsand social issues thirty years after publication.
