Fronteiras entre história e literatura: a construção do milenarismo de Antônio Conselheiro em Os Sertões de Euclides da Cunha

Abstract

This work of Final Paper aims at the analysis the construction of millenarianism in Os Sertões of Euclides da Cunha. The work is based upon bibliographic research, and the analysis of the literary composition is performed from a historical and literary perspective, underscoring the factors that unleashed the construction of the character Antônio Conselheiro as a catholic mystic leader, through messianism as a collective utopia of wilderness. It relates Os Sertões with to Guerra de Canudos, taking that in support of this, verifying the reviews that historiographers and literates made in relation to this contiguity. This work emphasizes the history and ideals of utopia, in addition to explain the social, economic and political conditions of the República Velha, as essential aid to deduce how and under what conditions the author has proposed the development of the Os Sertões. As such, this work stands as Euclides da Cunha portrayed an inlander and their peculiar customs, shaping Antônio Conselheiro in view of this, a literary and historical character.
