A literatura vitoriana sob a perspectiva brasileira: inserção e recepção de Oliver Twist e David Copperfield, de Charles Dickens, no polissistema literário brasileiro

Abstract

This monography develops a descriptive, analytic, comparative, exploratory, documentary and historical research, whose objective was to describe the process of insertion of the translations of Oliver Twist (1838) and David Copperfield (1850) by the British writer Charles Dickens (1812-1870), in the Brazilian literary system. That way, it was attempted to identify elements that indicate the reception that these translations obtained with the Brazilian public. Therefore, the theoretical contribution is constituted by the Theory of Polysystems, by Itamar Even-Zohar (1990), and the theory of Descriptive Studies of Translation, by Gideon Toury (2012). In order to reach the objective, it was firstly sought to identify the function that the works perform in the production system, as well as to verify the role that their translations exert in the reception system, to later describe the translation choices applied to the final product. Theories related to Translation Studies are presented, followed by socio-cultural contextualization of the production system, the Victorian Period. The two works are classified as autobiographical, since many of its episodes are interconnected with events lived by Dickens. Thus, we discuss the author’s life, with the indication of facts that were portrayed in the novels. Subsequently, are discussed the steps of analysis and description of the two translations of Oliver Twist, the first one has by it translator Antônio Ruas (1983), and the second version is by Machado de Assis and Ricardo Lísias (2013); And the two translations of David Copperfield, the first translation is from Costa Neves (1963), while the second was developed by José Rubens Siqueira (2016). The translations indicate the insertion process, and expose the epithets that provide recognition of reception features of the Dickensian works.
